Art therapy allows for expression of feelings and thoughts that are often without words. It is through this expression that clients begin to create a narrative, revise their world view, gain insight and awareness, and work to transcend adversity. It is through color, lines, shapes, materials and processes that the path of illness changes into a path of healing, hope, and understanding.
Horticultural therapy is an effective, evidence-based therapeutic modality similar to music, art, recreation and other therapies. The practice of horticultural therapy uses plants, gardens, and nature-based activities to promote well-being for the participants.
Horticultural therapists assess emotional well-being, social functioning, communication abilities, cognitive and physical abilities, and horticultural interest. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, horticultural therapists design treatment programs to address specific goals. Individual and group sessions give clients a break from talk therapy; hands-on activities help them reconnect to the natural world, experience feelings of purpose and success, and develop practical skills that can be utilized to maintain treatment gains.
Clients at HopeWay will participate in activities in the greenhouse, as well as planting vegetables, herbs, and fruits in the raised garden beds. These will then be used in the creation of healthy foods in the learning kitchen.
Music Therapy is the use of evidence based music interventions to accomplish individualized nonmusical goals. Through lyric analysis, drumming, song writing, imagery, and relaxation, music therapy promotes wellness, helps to manages stress, expresses feeling, improves communication and much more. The Music Therapist will assess clients during each session and change or modify goals as needed.
Imagine you are feeling anxious, sad, lonely, or overwhelmed. Now imagine sitting beside a dog, petting him or her, and noticing yourself starting to feel better. Animal-assisted therapy, also known as pet therapy, is becoming more and more popular and is being used in hospitals, clinics, treatment centers, and nursing homes. This type of therapy can help lessen depression, increase happy feelings, and help those dealing with feelings of hopelessness, stress, and fatigue. Spending time with animals can bring feelings of comfort in stressful situations and can help people feel more optimistic.

At HopeWay we believe healing involves body, mind and spirit. Our pastoral care counselor is available to help guide clients in specific ways that will strengthen their faith in a higher being as part of their growth and healing. Our Faith Room offers space for one-on-one visits, special spiritual rituals and services, and yoga and meditation.
Yoga & Meditation
Best practice therapy involves intentional work with the body and mind. HopeWay offers yoga and guided meditation as tools to help individuals center themselves and develop space in their whole being for room to grow.
Recreational therapy structures groups based on the six dimensions of wellness: emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, social and vocational. Clients will be encouraged to attend groups that will be designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities. The Recreational Therapy program will promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate activity limitations. Clients will be encouraged to utilize the gym, engage in team activities, and participate in group discussions about healthy living. Through the use of leisure education, recreation therapy will promote stress management, healthy coping skills, healthy social skills, and increase self- esteem. Yoga is also offered to provide mindfulness, relaxation and meditation.
